In 2021, floods hit southern Bahia; last year, Porto Alegre; and 2025 begins with S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s seaside and many other regions will face the same reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><b>Brazilian climate-related disasters<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the last couple of years, <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><b>Brazil has faced major climate change-related disasters<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #824896\"><a style=\"color: #824896\" href=\"https:\/\/disasterphilanthropy.org\/stories\/helping-flood-affected-families-in-bahia-brazil\/#:~:text=In%20December%202021%2C%20heavy%20rains,homeless%2C%20and%2073%2C032%20were%20displaced\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In 2021, heavy rains hit southern Bahia<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and northern Minas Gerais, causing severe flooding. The government declared a state of emergency in 163 cities, leaving 26 people dead, 520 injured, as well as 28,224 people were left homeless and 73,032 displaced from their homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In May 2024, <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><strong><a style=\"color: #824896\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-68968987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major parts of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, including the capital Porto Alegre, were affected by severe flooding<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, leaving 496 cities impacted, 150,000 people displaced and even the state airport underwater for a couple of days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year, <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><strong><a style=\"color: #824896\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/videos\/cdrykzr5038ohttps:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/videos\/cdrykzr5038o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heavy rains led to severe flooding in the state of S\u00e3o Paulo<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, causing transport chaos with many flooded streets and subway stations, as well as fallen trees. <\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #824896\"><b>On one side, there is the abundance of water; on the other, droughts<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #824896\">.<\/span> Even Amazon, known for its water availability, faced severe droughts, a cruel metaphor that illustrates the lack of financial resources allocated to emergencies such as these. In a scenario where extreme climate events are becoming more frequent and intense, exposing the vulnerability of our communities, 750,000 Brazilians have already been displaced due to natural disasters, whether being floods, droughts, landslides, among others. Globally, by 2023, the number of people displaced due to climate disasters had already surpassed those displaced by war, repression and violence, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this context, giving culture is essential. <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><b>Strengthening philanthropy is crucial in order to promote initiatives that directly support those affected by climate change.<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Donations and the work of CSOs (Civil Society Organizations) are often the first responses in times of crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><strong><a style=\"color: #824896\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-68968987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent experience in Rio Grande do Sul<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is an example of this. <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><strong>Several CSOs quickly mobilized to raise funds and help families affected by the floods.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We saw a peak in donations and historic mobilization. Some organizations, for example, lacked enough volunteers to manage the large volume of donations, while others saw a dramatic decline in the incoming flow of financial resources as the tragedy faded away from the media spotlight. This is why knowledge of the territory and the regional outreach of local organizations are essential to ensure that resources efficiently reach those who need them most.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><b>territorial-focused approach<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> emerges as a systemic and long-lasting solution to connect donors with local organizations. In Rio Grande do Sul, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Fundo Comunit\u00e1rio Porto de Todos\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, created by Gera\u00e7\u00f5es Foundation, supported local CSOs so that they could resume their activities after the floods. Similar initiatives have already been carried out in other regions, such as the \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fundo de Chuvas\u2019,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the city of Florian\u00f3polis, created by ICOM (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instituto Comunit\u00e1rio Grande Florian\u00f3polis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2018Fundo Brumadinho\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, managed by <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><strong><a style=\"color: #824896\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nossacidade.net\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Nossa Cidade<\/i><\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which have demonstrated the effectiveness of this type of strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In our current climate reality, tragedies like these, unfortunately, tend to become more and more common with increasing intensity. <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><b>Being prepared for the next crisis even before the current one ends is essential.<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Territorial assessments and the ability of local <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><strong><a style=\"color: #824896\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idis.org.br\/en\/2023\/06\/21\/umbrellas-lightning-rods-and-cisterns-for-a-more-transformative-philanthropy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Foundations (CFs)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to mobilize multiple resources and assets in a structured way are indispensable tools for dealing with emergencies. Local leaders, with territorial knowledge, therefore play a crucial role in the efficient distribution of resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Strategic philanthropy may be the key to swiftly and effectively responding to tragedies. If you want to contribute, donate to local organizations, such as <\/span><span style=\"color: #824896\"><strong><a style=\"color: #824896\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idis.org.br\/en\/social-impact-projects\/transforming-territories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Foundations<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We know disasters will continue to happen. The difference we can make is in how we respond to them.
