The\u00a0<\/span>Global Philanthropy Forum<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(GPF) 2026, held in San Francisco from March 18 to 20, served as a pivotal stage for reimagining the structural foundations of social investment.\u00a0Representing\u00a0IDIS,\u00a0the Institute for the Development of Social Investment, Paula Fabiani, CEO, and Denise Carvalho, Director of Impact Assessment,\u00a0led\u00a0a prominent Brazilian delegation of 24 leaders.\u00a0The 2026 edition was particularly significant as it marked the\u00a0<\/span>celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Global Philanthropy Forum<\/span><\/b>, a milestone that invited reflection on a quarter-century of advancing global\u00a0philanthropy\u00a0and fostering a community of purpose-driven leaders.\u00a0As the organization that annually spearheads the Brazilian presence at the Forum, IDIS continues to bridge local innovations with global philanthropic trends, fostering a cross-border exchange of strategies and visions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the evocative theme\u00a0<\/span>\u201cArchitecting the Future: Operating Systems for a New Era of Philanthropy,\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0the summit moved beyond the discussion of isolated projects. Instead, it focused on the \u201coperating systems\u201d\u2014the underlying rules, incentives, and cultural norms\u2014that dictate how capital is deployed for the public good. The consensus among participants was clear: the world is not merely navigating a period of transition, but a fundamental change of era, demanding a radical update to the philanthropic playbook.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most profound discussions\u00a0focused\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span>philanthropy\u2019s unique ability to act as \u201csociety\u2019s risk capital.\u201d<\/span><\/b>\u00a0In a landscape where governments are often constrained by political cycles and corporations by quarterly results, philanthropy\u00a0remains\u00a0the\u00a0main\u00a0sector with the flexibility to fund high-risk, high-leverage initiatives.\u00a0This urgency is underscored by a\u00a0gloomy\u00a0global backdrop; the Forum took place amidst escalating international conflicts and humanitarian crises that have redefined the geopolitical landscape. These wars serve as a stark reminder of the fragility of our systems and the immediate need for philanthropy to address the human cost of global instability with moral consistency and a refusal to remain paralyzed by political finger-pointing.\u00a0The Forum\u00a0also\u00a0highlighted that for philanthropy to be truly transformative, it must embrace its role at the \u201cfrontier\u201d\u2014backing unproven models, supporting institutional verification, and tackling systemic issues like climate stewardship and democratic resilience that traditional markets tend to avoid.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The\u00a0Brazilian\u00a0delegation\u00a0observed\u00a0a growing urgency for\u00a0<\/span>coordinated action<\/span><\/b>. With rising global inequality and eroding trust in institutions, the\u00a0philanthropic\u00a0sector is being called upon to provide the collective vision that other sectors currently lack. This requires a shift from fragmented, individual efforts to a more integrated approach where philanthropic capital acts as a catalyst for broader systemic change.\u00a0A strategic meeting was held to discuss, alongside key Latin American organizations\u2014including partners from the CAF Global Alliance, and other regional representatives\u2014the idea of\u00a0<\/span>creating a dedicated space to discuss philanthropy specifically within the Latin American context<\/span><\/b>. This initiative aims to strengthen the regional voice and foster a collaborative ecosystem tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of the region.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0necessity to\u00a0<\/span>rethink the nature of\u00a0capital\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0was\u00a0another relevant theme. The Forum proposed\u00a0a paradigm shift: moving away from viewing wealth as a static \u201cstock\u201d to be guarded, toward seeing it as a flow that must serve life. This perspective challenges traditional endowment\u00a0management and\u00a0grantmaking\u00a0cycles, suggesting that the true value of philanthropic capital lies in its movement and its ability to influence the much larger pools of private and corporate capital.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By repositioning wealth as a tool for impact rather than an\u00a0end in itself, philanthropists\u00a0can drive a more\u00a0equitable\u00a0distribution of resources. Discussions explored how philanthropic \u201crisk-taking\u201d can de-risk social investments for private investors, effectively pulling more capital toward solving the world\u2019s most pressing challenges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI)<\/span><\/b>\u00a0occupied\u00a0a central place\u00a0in the 2026 agenda. While AI offers unprecedented opportunities for the social sector\u2014from data-driven impact assessment to personalized social services\u2014it also poses significant risks of\u00a0exacerbating\u00a0existing inequalities. The Forum called for the establishment of \u201cmoral covenants\u201d and robust regulatory frameworks to ensure that technology\u00a0remains\u00a0a force for good.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a recognized gap between the technological capabilities of the corporate world and the resources available to the social sector. To bridge this divide, philanthropy must invest in the digital infrastructure of civil society, ensuring that nonprofits are not just consumers of technology, but active participants in shaping an ethical, human-centered\u00a0digital future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, the\u00a0summit reinforced that\u00a0<\/span>the most critical\u00a0component\u00a0of any philanthropic \u201coperating system\u201d is not technical, but human.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Trust, collaboration, and moral consistency were identified as the essential pillars for\u00a0architecting\u00a0this new era. The discussions underscored that the future of philanthropy cannot be\u00a0built\u00a0in isolation; it requires a commitment to listening to diverse voices and\u00a0centering\u00a0the experiences of frontline communities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GPF has certainly\u00a0tackled important subjects\u00a0the concern global challenges, however, it lacked\u00a0global\u00a0and diverse\u00a0points of\u00a0view.\u00a0Only a small number of speakers came from outside the United States, with the majority based in the U.S. While this imbalance is understandable\u2014especially considering the\u00a0current\u00a0difficulties\u00a0imposed the\u00a0the\u00a0US\u00a0to\u00a0access the country\u00a0\u2014\u00a0it\u00a0must\u00a0also\u00a0be said\u00a0that it\u00a0represented\u00a0a missed opportunity. The event could have drawn more extensively on perspectives from\u00a0different\u00a0regions\u00a0with long histories of operating under difficult conditions, offering valuable lessons and inspiration for developing new philanthropic models suited to both local and global contexts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0we\u00a0return with these insights, the mission is to translate\u00a0such\u00a0reflections into local action, strengthening the impact of\u00a0philanthropy and\u00a0social investment in Brazil. The challenges of\u00a0our decade\u00a0require leaderships\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0as courageous as collaborative.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
