BRAZILIAN PHILANTHROPY FORUM

The Brazilian Philanthropy Forum aims to provide an exclusive space for the philanthropic community to gather, exchange experiences and learn with peers, enriching the strategic philanthropy in order to promote the Brazilian society’s development. The event is now in its 13th edition and has brought together over 5,000 participants, including philanthropists, leaders, and national and international experts.

‘Interlaced Philanthropy’ is the theme of the Brazilian Philanthropy Forum 2024. 

In order to analyse and discuss the philanthropy role in Brazil’s development, great speakers such as Ana Lúcia Villela, Atila Roque, Atti Worku, Eduardo Giannetti, Edvaldo Vieira, Eduardo Lyra, Chrtistiane Torloni, Guilherme Leal, Gilberto Carvalho, Jane Wales, Jorge Gerdau Johannpeter, Giovanni Harvey, Lester M. Salamon, Luiza Helena Trajano, Maílson da Nóbrega, Matthew Bishop, Peter Eigen, Rob Garris, Swanee Hunt, Viviane Senna and many others have attended the Forum.

The Brazilian Philanthropy Forum is a joint initiative of the Institute for the Development of Social Investment (IDIS) and the Global Philanthropy Forum (GPF).

Adriana Sanches

Attorney in Philanthropy and Social Investment at PLKC Advogados

Adriana Sanches de Rezende is an attorney in the Philanthropy and Social Investment practice at PLKC Advogados. She specializes in corporate and contractual law for civil society organizations and endowment fund structuring. Adriana holds a law degree from Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC/SP) and a postgraduate degree in Contract Law from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV Direito SP). She is also a certified mediator with experience in business, educational, and family disputes, including advising family businesses on governance processes. Adriana completed her postgraduate studies in Negotiation, Mediation, and Conflict Resolution at the Institute for the Training and Certification of Lusophone Mediators (ICFML), in partnership with the Faculty of Law of the Porto School – Portuguese Catholic University.

Alex Pinheiro

Co-founder & CEO at SQUARE Ecosystem 

A serial technology entrepreneur since 1994, manager, advisor, and investor, Alex has founded several internationally acclaimed Brazilian startups. He served as Director of Digital Transformation at SOMOS Educação and created the Plurall platform. 

Currently, Alex is a board member of IDIS – Institute for Social Investment Development and the NGO HEMOCIONE. He is also a member of the Board of Future Trustees at Athon Higher Education, Education Advisor for the Rio de Janeiro Commercial Association (ACRJ), philanthropist, and co-founder & CEO of the educational technology investment holding SQUARE (square.tec.br).

Alexander Kellner

Director of Museu Nacional/UFRJ

Born in Liechtenstein and naturalized Brazilian, he has graduated in geology and earned a MSc from UFRJ, a M. Phil and a Ph.D. from Columbia University in a joint program with the American Museum of Natural History. Since 1997, he works at the Museu Nacional/UFRJ, where he was recently reelected as director for 2022-2026. Published over 1400 publications (including 320 original scientific studies); wrote several popular books and curated national and international exhibits. Organized expeditions around the Globe, including Brazil, Atacama (Chile), Kerman (Iran), Liaoning (China) and Antarctica (James Ross Island). Due his scientific activity he received several honors, (e.g., Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences, Foreign Corresponding Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences) and is Research Associate of the American Museum of Natural History and the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (China). He was also admitted to the National Order of Scientific Merit Commander Class and promoted to the Grand Cross Class.

Aline Odara

Executive Director of the Agbara Fund

Aline Odara is a scientist, educator, ethnic-racial relations researcher, Candomblecist, passionate about Afro-Brazilian culture, and an activist in the fight for Racial Equity. She is the creator and Executive Director of the Agbara Fund, the first philanthropic fund for Black Women in Brazil, whose mission is to fight for Economic Justice for Black Women. She is the winner of the Folha de SP 2023 Social Entrepreneur Award, one of the 100 innovative women by Época Negócios 2023, winner of the Black Women Give Back 2023 (USA), and a finalist for the AVON/UOL 2023 Inspiring Women Award.

Ana Fontes

Founder of Rede Mulher Empreendedora (RME) and Instituto RME

Ana Fontes is a brazilian social entrepreneur, founder of Rede Mulher Empreendedora (RME) and Instituto RME. 

Vice-president of UN Brazil’s Global Compact Council, member of Presidency of the Republic of Brazil’s Economic, Social and Sustainable Development Council, chief leader of W20, a group of engagement of G20 and counselor of Unimed Assist, Avon Institute, and, management of brazilian universities, UAM/Grupo  nima.

She’s elected one of brazilian most powerful women by Forbes Brazil magazine, in 2019, and was also cover of the edition about “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion”, last year.

In march 2022, Ana release her first book called “Negócios: um assunto de mulheres – A força transformadora do empreendedorismo feminino”, our “Business: a subject for women – The transformative power of female entrepreneurship”, in free translation.

Ana Julião

General Manager of Edelman Brazil

General Manager of Edelman Brazil, Ana Julião has 35 years of experience in the communications market. Throughout her career, she has developed, led and executed communications projects that have helped private and public companies promote and protect their reputation with diverse audiences. She has led teams and developed projects with global visibility, such as the strategic communications planning for the Rio 2016 Gand the communications coordination for Rio+20. She is a journalist, with experience in the newsrooms of O Globo, Folha de S. Paulo and Jornal do Commercio. In 2024, she was elected the best PR professional in Latin America by PR Week.

Beatriz Johannpeter

Director of the Helda Gerdau Institute

A member of the fifth generation of the Gerdau Johannpeter Family and the Family Council, she is the director of the Helda Gerdau Institute and an associate of the Cambridge Family Enterprise Group (CFEG) Brazil. As a founding associate of Todos pela Educação, she serves on the boards of the Iberê Camargo Foundation, ICE, and the Aliança pelo Impacto. She was vice-president of the Instituto Gerdau Council and chaired GIFE from 2014 to 2018 – Group of Institutes and Foundations. She was a member of the IBGC Family Control Companies Committee (2019-2023). She holds a degree in Architecture and Urbanism and executive education in Corporate Social Responsibility from Harvard Business School.

Carla Reis

Chief of the Health Industrial and Services Complex Department in the Productive Development, Innovation, and Foreign Trade Area at BNDES

She is an economist with a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Institute of Economics at UFRJ. A career employee at BNDES since 2006, she currently serves as Chief of the Health Industrial and Services Complex Department in the Productive Development, Innovation, and Foreign Trade Area at BNDES. Since 2008, she has been involved in BNDES’s health agenda, contributing to the development and implementation of policies aimed at strengthening the healthcare industry to reduce vulnerabilities in the SUS (Unified Health System). Previously, she worked as a project analyst in the Social Area of BNDES and at Finep/MCTI.

Carola Matarazzo

Chief Executive Officer of the Bem Maior Movement

Carola graduated in Business Administration from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado. She began her journey in the social field as a volunteer at Liga Solidária in the year 2000. She held various positions within the organization until she reached the Presidency, where she served from 2012 to 2018. After leaving, she took on the leadership role in the creation of the Bem Maior Movement. In 2020, she was awarded the Social Entrepreneur of the Year prize, sponsored by Folha de São Paulo and the Schwab Foundation in the Covid-19 Mitigation category. Carola also sits on the advisory boards of Liga Solidária, Artesol, Instituto Protea, and Instituto iungo. Additionally, she is one of the co-founders and associates of the Pact Against Hunger.

Cida Bento

Co-founder and board member of the Center for Studies on Labor Relations and Inequalities.

Maria Aparecida da Silva Bento, also known as Cida Bento, was born in São Paulo (SP). A Ph.D. in psychology, she defended her thesis titled “Narcissistic pacts in racism: whiteness and power in business organizations and public power” in 2002. She is a board member and one of the founders of the Center for Studies on Labor Relations and Inequalities. She was a visiting professor at the University of Texas and, in 2015, was elected by the British magazine The Economist as one of the fifty most influential people in the world in the field of diversity.

Clara Serva

Head of the Business and Human Rights area and pro bono coordinator at TozziniFreire

She advises companies on human rights issues, including due diligence and human rights risk analysis, policy development, review of monitoring mechanisms, prevention, mitigation, and remediation of negative impacts, and dispute resolution. She has led award-winning projects, such as advocacy for affirmative action for marginalized groups (2023), corporate management practice for the inclusion of transgender individuals (2022), the Legal Workshop in Heliópolis (2020), and the Guide to Rights of People with Intellectual Disabilities (2019). She holds a Master’s degree from PUC-SP with research on human rights self-composition.

She has received awards such as the CEBDS Leadership in Feminine Leadership in 2022 and “Outstanding Contribution on Diversity and Inclusion” by CEBDS. She has been recognized by Chambers Brazil and globally in ESG and Third Sector (Band 1). She co-leads the Social Impact Thematic Chamber of CEBDS (Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development); regional advisor for Latin America at GBI (Global Business Initiative on Human Rights) for Latin America; Substitute Counselor for BCTI – The Business Commission to Tackle Inequality; member of the ESG Committee of CFA Society Brazil; among other positions in national and international organizations.

Claudia Soares Baré

Executive Director of Podáali – Brazilian Amazon Indigenous Fund 

Claudia Soares Martins is from the Baré people of the Upper Rio Negro region – Amazonas, Brazil, and her indigenous name is Kirimbawa (brave/strong). She has always been involved in the indigenous movement in the region, coming from a family of many warrior women, with the fight for indigenous rights running in her blood. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the Federal University of Amazonas (2016). Claudia worked at the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of the Rio Negro – FOIRN (2004) on the PPTAL project and later at the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon – COIAB (2009) representing in Brasília. She has been involved in discussions advocating for indigenous youth leadership in the Upper Rio Negro region (2013/2015). Claudia served as Indigenous Affairs Advisor at the São Gabriel da Cachoeira Municipal Council/Amazonas (2016/2017) and as Executive Secretary of COIAB in Manaus (2019/2020), where she witnessed the launch and foundation of Podáali – Brazilian Amazon Indigenous Fund. In August 2021, she assumed the role of Executive Director of Podáali as Secretary Director, appointed by its Deliberative Council.

Cristiane Sultani

Founder of Beja Institute

Cristiane Sultani holds a degree in Law and a Master’s in Banking Law, with specialization in corporate law and impact investments. She worked as a lawyer for 23 years at the São Paulo Stock Exchange and BBA-Creditanstalt bank; was a partner at Family Office Consenso, executive at Itaú Unibanco, and partner at Veirano Advogados. Since 2014, she has served as COO of Pedro Alberto Fischer Family Office, of which she is currently CEO. Cristiane founded the Beja Institute, a social impact organization, in 2021, of which she is Chairman of the Board. As a philanthropist and impact investor, Cristiane is associated with the Institute of Corporate Citizenship, The Forward Global, and Synergos GPC.

Daniel Paixão

Creator of Hub.Periférico

Born and raised in the Jacaré Community in the Maranguape I neighborhood, Paulista – PE, Daniel is 23 years old. A natural social entrepreneur, he founded and has served as President of the Associação Fruto de Favela since he was 14 years old. This organization has positively impacted over 39,000 marginalized lives through education, technology, and humanitarian assistance.

He is the creator of Hub.Periférico, a startup that functions as an Incubator and Pre-accelerator for Innovative and Creative Solutions and Businesses aimed at peripheral communities. Daniel is currently pursuing a degree in Journalism at the Universidade Católica de Pernambuco and has been a scientific researcher and changemaker at the Laboratory of Innovation, Climate Change, and Sustainability (LIMCS-UNICAP). He is also accredited as a technical instructor in Impact Entrepreneurship by SEBRAE-PE (Brazilian Service of Support to Micro and Small Enterprises of Pernambuco).

Daniel has received awards at the European Green Contest in Brazil (2019), a SEBRAE-PE hackathon (2020), and the UNFPA Innovation Journey in Brazil (2021). He has represented Brazil at various UN assemblies, conferences, and forums in Switzerland, Costa Rica, Chile, and Panama.

Denise Carvalho

Senior Manager of Evaluation at IDIS

Graduated in International Relations from the University of Brasília (UnB), she has more than 20 years of experience in design, management, monitoring and evaluation of social and business development projects, having worked in International Organizations (United Nations in Brazil and Equatorial Guinea), private companies (PwC and Polaries Participações) and in Third Sector (FNP, Caritas, Switzerland, Instituto Votorantim, Fundação Abrinq). Denise also has a postgraduate degree in Evaluation of Results and Impacts of Public Organizations and Programs, from the Universidad del Litoral (Argentina) and a Master’s in Entrepreneurship and Innovation, from BI International, and specializations in the country and abroad. Currently, she is a student of the Master in Assessment at the Universität des Saarlandes (Germany). Denise also acquired, in 2023, through Social Value International, certification in the Social Return on Investment Accredited Practitioner assessment protocol.

Eliane C. Moneda Macari

President of FEAV – Fórum das Entidades Assistenciais de Valinhos

Originally from Vargem Grande do Sul, SP, a small town in the interior of São Paulo near the Minas Gerais border, Eliane has over 20 years of experience in multinational business environments, leading teams. With a background in teaching, Mathematics, and a postgraduate degree in Marketing, she has also worked in the social sector of companies, leveraging professional experience to advance social causes. This work helped develop skills, knowledge, partnerships, and relationships essential for treating social causes as business ventures.

Eliane embraced the challenge of leading FEAV as an opportunity to apply acquired experience and continue the association’s founding vision: to build a strong, ethical organization with a distinct personality, recognized by both civil society and government authorities. The goal is to strengthen and support the OSCs and FEAV, effectively representing them.

Eliane Trindade

Editor of The Social Entrepreneur Award of Folha de S.Paulo

Graduated in Social Communication from the University of Brasília in 1990, she did a postgraduate degree in Political Science at the University of Pisa (Italy) in 1993. Eliane worked for the magazines IstoÉ, Época, Marie Claire, IstoÉ Gente and Revista da Folha. She is currently the editor of the Social Entrepreneur Award, a partnership between Folha de S.Paulo and the Schwab Foundation, and also the head of the ‘Rede Social’ column. In 2002, she won the Ayrton Senna Journalism award with the report ‘What they will be when they grow up’. In 2005, she released the book-report ‘As Meninas da Esquina’ (Ed. Record), which brought together the diaries of six girls who were victims of sexual exploitation in Brazil. The book inspired the movie ‘Sonho Roubados’ (09), with the actress Nanda Costa and directed by Sandra Werneck.

 

Erika Sanchez Saez

Executive Director of the ACP Institute

Erika Sanchez Saez is a social communicator and researcher, currently executive director of the ACP Institute, member of the coordinating committee of the Culture of Giving Movement, member of the steering committee of the Conjunta Platform and the Sociedade Viva initiative. She is also an advisor to Funbea and Arredondar board. She is the author and organizer of several publications, including Collaborative Philanthropy and Horizons and Priorities for Philanthropy and Social Investment in Brazil.

Flavio Papelbaum

Real Estate Solutions and Urban Redevelopment Department at BNDES

Production Engineer graduated from PUC-RJ in 2005. Currently working in the Real Estate Solutions and Urban Redevelopment Department at BNDES, with a mission to structure projects aimed at optimizing public assets through disposal or concessions/PPP, and developing solutions for urban area redevelopment. Additionally, has been working on structuring an Endowment Fund to support Brazilian museums.

In his 13 years at BNDES, he has dedicated most of his time to structuring concession and PPP projects, participating in various infrastructure projects across the road, airport, urban mobility, and real estate sectors.

For about 3 years, he worked in BNDES’s Capital Markets Division, managing BNDESPAR’s investments in companies within the logistics infrastructure and urban mobility sectors. Before joining BNDES, he worked in the Capital Markets area at Finep, Petrobras, and Ideiasnet.

Giuliana Ortega

Sustainability Director at RD – RD Saúde

She has 20 years of professional experience working with sustainability and private social investment.She served for five years as Head of the Regional Office of the Laudes Foundation (formerly C&A Foundation) in Brazil. In this role, she locally led the foundation’s work in areas such as circular economy, human rights, decent work, gender justice, community engagement, sustainable raw materials, and organic agriculture. She also led the global learning agenda. 

Her professional experiences also include roles at C&A, Instituto Ethos, and Natura. In these organizations, she worked on creating and implementing business sustainability strategies, supply chain compliance management, and developing international sustainability research and standards. 

Giuliana holds a degree in Business Administration from University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), a post-graduation in Global Governance from the German Development Institute (Germany), and a Master degree in Sustainability and Responsibility from Ashridge-Hult University (UK). Currently, she also serves as a board member for the C&A Institute, AC

Grace Maingi

Executive Director of the Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF)

KCDF began its work in Kenya in 1997 as a public foundation that nationally supports communities to address their priority needs and challenges sustainably. KCDF’s focus is on flourishing and resilient communities. Our philosophy is that communities have the ability to mitigate, adapt to, and recover from shocks and stresses in a manner that reduces chronic vulnerability.

Grace is a human rights lawyer who has been working, over the last twenty-three years, in the not-for-profit sector in Kenya. Her work has focused on community development, civic education and engagement, constitutionalism, promoting free and fair elections, women’s rights, and growth within the legal profession in Kenya. Her passion for social justice and community development aligns with her main drive to reduce inequality.

Guilherme Sylos

Prospection Director at IDIS

He has a fifteen-year career, developed in the voluntary sector and in Startup of businesses, acting in the fields of planning, marketing, finance, fundraising, and in the commercial and operation fields. He is a professional with vast baggage in many sectors. He is a founder of NGO “Sociedade Mar” and co-founder of Make-A-Wish Brasil, where he acted as vice president, member of the audit board and Executive Director. He has ample experience in negotiation with business partners for fundraising and for implementation of projects. He is also a leadership, formation and team of volunteers management specialist. He has a degree in Hotel Management by Renascença College, with an MBA in Project Management by Fundação Getúlio Vargas.

Heloisa G. Salgado

Partner and Partnership Coordinator at Quintessa

Heloisa, a law graduate from FGV-SP with partial education from Peking University (Shenzhen, China), began her career in capital markets and M&A at White & Case before co-founding the dispute resolution firm Faleck & Associados and legaltech E-Zolve (ceased operations in 2017). She led impact investing at Provence Capital, focusing on biotech venture capital. Heloisa headed the Endowment Fund at Instituto Rodrigo Mendes from 2019 to 2022 and has been coordinating the Facebook Communities Accelerator (a program in partnership with Quintessa) since 2020. In her spare time, Heloisa also oversees business negotiation and mediation study groups and competitions at FGV.

Igor Ferrer

Director of Civil Society Partnerships at the National Secretariat for Social Dialogue and Public Policy Coordination

Igor Ferrer is the Director of Civil Society Partnerships at the National Secretariat for Social Dialogue and Public Policy Coordination, within the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, and President of the National Council for Promotion and Collaboration (Confoco). He is a lawyer with a specialization in Diplomatic Studies and has previously worked on issues related to the regulatory agenda for CSOs, as well as social, economic, and environmental rights.

Jair Resende

Responsible for the socio-educational sector at Fundação FEAC

Jair Resende is a senior executive with leadership experience in social responsibility. Sergio Fausto is General Director of Fundação Fernando Henrique Cardoso, he is co-director of the Project Plataforma Democrática and he is co-editor of the book series “O Estado da Democracia na América Latina”. He is a member of the Gacint-USP (International Conjuncture Analysis Group of the University of São Paulo). Under Cardoso´s two terms in office (1995-1999 and 1999-2003), Fausto served as advisor to the Ministry of Planning and Budget, of Development and External Trade and of Finance. In 2012, he was awarded with the Gus Hart Fellowship, a prize annually given by the Chicago Council of Global Affairs to academics and policy-makers for their contribution to democracy and development in Latin America. Sylvia Siqueira

Sylvia Siqueira, a journalist and ecofeminist anti-racist, was born in Recife and grew up amidst struggles for rights, justice, and democracy in Pernambuco, Brazil, and around the world. She has led organizations such as Mirim Brasil, Abong, IFM-SEI, FLAJ, and Nossa América Verde. Sylvia has worked with Malala Yousafzai advocating for girls’ right to education. She is currently serving as the Program Officer for Democratic Governance for Latin America and the Caribbean at Open Society Foundations. Sylvia studied journalism at the Federal University of Pernambuco and holds master’s degrees in Human Rights and Non-Profit Management from Madrid. She advocates that Black women play a central role in the reformation of democracy and that politics should be a place for ethical, just, and equitable transformations.

Tarcila Ursini

Tarcila Ursini is a pioneer in integrating sustainability into strategy, management, innovation, and culture within the business and board ecosystem in Brazil. According to her, organizations now face a new paradigm: profit is inseparable from caring for people and the planet. Ticiana is the founder and president of Somos Um, a business impact articulator that seeks to strengthen the social business ecosystem in Ceará. She is the brain behind Zunne, an impact investment program in partnership with Yunus Social Business and Trê Investindo com Causa, and co-founder of Estímulo 2020, which mobilized R$ 165 million to support small entrepreneurs in Brazil. She is also a co-founder of EllaImpacta, an Investment Facility aimed at empowering women through access to capital, and the visionary behind the CONEXÃO ODS event in partnership with the UN Global Compact.

Additionally, Ticiana holds important roles as Director of EDISCA and Counselor of Escolinha SOL. She is also a Counselor of the Coalition for Impact of ICE, a program that mobilizes significant resources to foster the impact of the business ecosystem in Brazil.

Vinicius Barrozo

Social Value Analyst at Globo and responsible for the ParaQuemDoar

Vinicius Barrozo is a publicist who has been dedicated to brand research and value projects for the past 7 years. Since February 2023, he has been working as a Social Value Analyst at Globo and is responsible for the ParaQuemDoar donations platform. His work scope also includes LGBTQIA+ agendas, Black communities, and Globo’s media support for the Third Sector.
