Created by IDIS – Institute for the Development of Social Investment, the pioneering endowment dedicated to strengthening private social investment and the culture of giving in Brazil, the Philanthropy Promotion Endowment, has reached BRL 10 million in assets.
Since its launch in 2024, the endowment has attracted nearly one hundred donors, including philanthropists who have made significant contributions, such as the Pipponzi Family, Armínio Fraga, José Luiz Egydio Setúbal, Luis Stuhlberger, Milu Villela, Neca Setubal, Teresa Cristina, and Candido Bracher. The funds raised were doubled through a donation from American philanthropist Mackenzie Scott to IDIS, and there are still BRL 3.3 million available for matching contributions.
“We believe that philanthropy is a powerful tool for social development in our country. We know that much has been accomplished, but there is still much to be done, and IDIS plays a fundamental role in expanding awareness and maturity around this topic in Brazil, which is why it has our support,” say Ticiana and Edson Queiroz, also major donors to the endowment.
According to the 2024 Endowment Performance Yearbook, Brazilian endowments reached a record BRL 770.4 million raised in 2024, a volume 48.4% higher than the previous year. Allocations to causes also grew, with BRL 2.6 billion donated to causes of public interest. The results demonstrate that endowments are consolidating themselves as relevant instruments for the long-term financial sustainability of causes and organizations in the third sector.
Throughout 2025, returns from the Promoting Philanthropy Endowment enabled key initiatives related to knowledge production and field-building within the social impact sector. These included the Brazil Giving Research 2024, the study “Pathways for a broader and more strategic role of family philanthropy in Brazil”, Philanthropy Day at COP30, and advocacy initiatives supporting philanthropic endowments. They also supported projects developed in partnership with other organizations, such as the Discover your Cause and the Movement for a Giving Culture. For 2026, it is estimated that BRL 1 million will be available to support new projects.
“For more than a decade, IDIS has been dedicated to strengthening endowments in Brazil. With the launch of the FFF, we adopted best practices in governance and investment to ensure long-term resources for strengthening strategic philanthropy and the culture of giving, offering our contribution to accelerate positive transformations and reduce inequalities in Brazil,” says Paula Fabiani, CEO of IDIS

What is an endowment?
Endowments are structures created to provide financial sustainability for public or private nonprofit institutions and/or to support programs and projects of public interest. In general, donated funds remain invested in financial assets, and only the investment returns are used to finance initiatives supporting a given cause or to cover all or part of the operating costs of socio-environmental organizations. Establishing an endowment allows its founders to perpetuate a cause or an institution, leaving an important legacy for society.
